Citizen Cake - Fillmore Edition

On Sunday, Will and I joined Katharine at the new Fillmore location of Citizen Cake for lunch.
Will and I split two sandwiches:
Fried chicken Cobb sandwich, bacon, egg, avocado, tomato vinaigrette
Roast beef sandwich, au jus, caramelized onion-horseradish aioli, shredded carrot and celery
Key showed up after we ate, in time to grab some macarons. I decided to try a few flavors of macarons: salted caramel, raspberry rose and cassis violet:
On Sunday, Will and I joined Katharine at the new Fillmore location of Citizen Cake for lunch.
Will and I split two sandwiches:
Fried chicken Cobb sandwich, bacon, egg, avocado, tomato vinaigrette
Everything was very tasty, and it was great to see Citizen Cake thriving again on the very busy and popular Fillmore Street.
Now, I just have to try Elizabeth Falkner's brunch over at Orson...
I Heart Saturdays in a Long Weekend

On Saturday morning, Will and I joined Sandy, JoJo, Sue Hee and a slightly healthier version of Robert at Sycamore in the Mission for brunch. Sycamore is the old Country Station Sushi location on Mission between 17th and 18th. They offer a reasonable and non-conventional brunch menu with $10 bottomless mimosas and self-serve coffee in a laid-back setting.
I went for the mix-n-match Sliders and chose one of each of the following:
It was very tasty and reasonable, and it was great to catch up with everyone.
Later that night, Will and I headed over to Beth's place down the hill from us for a potluck dinner. As usual, we each envisioned that we needed to feed everyone, so the cumulative picture of all our efforts was an out-of-control-too-much-food potluck, see pics below.
Everything was super tasty and we ended up with an international flair. Thanks for hosting, Beth!

Celebrity Autobiography

Hooray for long weekends! I can't believe it's already mid-January!
Last weekend, Will and I headed up to Tahoe to hang out in our new ski-condo with a rad crew of folks. This year, we're back at Squaw, and JonZ landed a sweet place in Squaw Creek. We didn't head up there this weekend (our season passes are blacked out on Sat-Sun), and I have work to deal with (gross, I know), so I figured this would also be a good time to catch up on life.
One thing I have been doing less and less is checking out great things that the SF arts and culture scene has to offer. So, when a little article about SF Sketchfest caught my eye this week, I decided to get on it and get tickets to something.
On Friday night, Will and I met up with Abe and Sue Hee (Robert was feeling under the weather, and boy, did he miss out on a good time!). We grabbed early dinner at the always-dependable Canteen, and then walked a couple blocks to the Marines Memorial Theater to catch "Celebrity Autobiography".
"Celebrity Autobiography" is a comedy show where celebrities read and act out tell-all autobiographies from other celebrities. For this show, the readers/actors were co-creators Eugene Pack and Dayle Reyfel, with Will Forte (Saturday Night Live, "MacGruber", 30 Rock), Rachael Harris ("The Hangover", Daily Show with Jon Stewart), Laura Kightlinger (Saturday Night Live), Laraine Newman (Saturday Night Live), Joe Pantoliano (The Sopranos, "The Matrix"), and Jonathan Silverman ("Weekend at Bernies", The Single Guy).
Abe drinking is his beer in a theater-approved container:

The show was hilarious. The various autobiographies acted out were written by Ivana Trump, Sylvester Stallone, Tommy Lee, Kenny Loggins, Suzanne Somers (poems), Hedy Lamarr, Burt Reynolds, Lonnie Anderson, The Kardashians, Debbie Reynolds, Eddie Fisher, Elizabeth Taylor.

Snow + Warm = Slushy Big Apple

Will and I took the Amtrak from Albany-Renssaler to Penn Station a day late (on the 28th instead of the 27th), which probably was a good thing. Even on the 28th, we arrived in Brooklyn to mounts of snow and unplowed streets. The boroughs were not pleased!
We were staying with Mike and Debbie in Boerum Hill in Brooklyn. They finally arrived at home from their vacation in Mexico two days late due to the weather. What a contrast!
Here are a couple pics of post-plowed streets:
On Wednesday, we headed into Manhattan to catch the matinee of Green Day's "American Idiot" Broadway musical at St. James Theater.
The show was great, like a fun, vibrant and creative Green Day concert. After the concert, we wandered West Village and the Highline in the Meatpacking district.
For dinner, we headed to Jonathan Waxman's restaurant, Barbuto, in West Village.
We shared the salumi plate (prosciutto di san danielle, sweet coppa, cacciatorini and rosemary focaccia) to start:
The
This dish might be the best ragu I've ever had. Apparently, the kitchen uses the parmesan rinds from the wheel to soak in the ragu over a long period of time...so good!
Will had the signature dish of pollo al forno (roasted JW chicken and salsa verde), which was incredibly tender:
I had the sogliola fritto (crispy local fluke, shaved fennel, wild arugula and meyer lemon):
For dessert, Will chose the bread pudding with vanilla gelato (no surprise there!), and was pretty bomb-diggity:
After dinner, it was back to Brooklyn to hang out with the Margulies' and grab a drink at Brooklyn Inn.

On Thursday, Will and I headed back to West Village to have brunch with Geneve at Cafe Cluny.
And then it was time to head off to JFK and hope the travel gods were on our side. Thankfully, our flight was uneventful...JFK was mild, we both got upgraded (yay Global Services status!) and we landed in SFO 45 minutes early. But alas, all could not end perfectly, as we got to Will's car and the battery was dead. Thank goodness for AAA!
