Triple Date @ Presidio Social Club

March 30, 2009

On Monday night, Will and I joined Sue Hee, Robert, Su*Wu and Winks for a triple date dinner at the Presidio Social Club. I didn't blog the dinner (as I've been there for dinner before), but below are a couple of pics from the dinner. Dinner was yummy too.

Great to see you Wu & Winks! Come back soon!

Mike & Susan Visit The Kids

March 30, 2009

FRIDAY

On Friday afternoon, Will's folks (Mike & Susan) rolled into town, on their way back to Vancouver Island after spending time at their timeshare in San Diego County (Ramona). Mike & Susan were spending the weekend with us in SF, checking out our new home for the first time.

I made dinner at home so we could spend a low-key Friday evening at home. We ended the evening with some cards (games of "31").

SATURDAY

On Saturday morning, I went for an early run at Crissy Field with JoJo and Liz, and then I joined Will, Mike and Susan for the rest of the day across GG Bridge for brunch and a hike. We hit our favorite Fred's Coffee Shop in Sausalito to bulk up on some food-fuel.

From Fred's, we headed over to the Marin Headlands via the Coastal route, with some picturesque camera ops on the way...

Our start point was Rodeo Beach, from which we were going to hike the Point Bonita Trail (ranked #1 on the top 7 Marin Headlands hikes). The hike includes great vantage points: Point Bonita Lighthouse, a few Batteries (Mendell, Wallace, Alexander), and the Nike Missile Site. It was a gorgeous day for a hike...

The hike was about 4.3 miles in total and I was excited to get some great pics of the area on a sunny day.

For dinner, we headed downtown to Perbacco. Perbacco is a fantastic restaurant and one of my faves in the city. I didn't blog the meal (as I've been there before), but we had a wonderful meal and the service was great.

After dinner, we went home and played some cards (our fave game, Euchre), and the games were tight and competitive in teams of girls (Susan and I) vs. the boys (Mike and Will). We ended with a 2-2 tie...

SUNDAY

On Sunday morning, I did an early run with the girls (Wendy, Sandy, Gail). From there, we met up with a big ol' crew for dim sum at Ton Kiang, as Su*Wu and Winks were also in town from NC. I was excited to have my chicken feet partner-in-crime at dim sum again, I've missed you Su!

After dim sum, Will and I took Mike and Susan on a walking tour of our neighborhood and were treated to some more awesome views on a sunny day...

For dinner, Mike and Susan whipped up a raclette dinner, and we finally got to use the raclette set that they had given to us quite some time ago. Finally! It was really tasty!

And, we also finally opened up one of our fantastic bottles of NZ wine that we got when Will and I were traveling to visit his bro and sister-in-law:

We ended the evening with some more rowdy rounds of Euchre (Susan and I got creamed 4-1 by Will and Mike, d'oh!)

It was a wonderful weekend and we had a lovely time with Mike and Susan, who finally go to spend some time with us in our new home.

Tahoe!

March 22, 2009

Later on Friday night (after dinner with the Navins), I headed up to Tahoe with the ladies (Wendy, Gail and Sandy). On Saturday morning, Wendy, Gail and I got ready to hit the slopes and the comical and unfortunate part of the morning ensued: One of my ladies (name rhymes with "Tail") dropped my helmet full of goggles and mitts out of the car while loading up stuff and then one of my other ladies (name rhymes with "Bendy") backed up over some of it with her Suburu. The goggles and mitts made it out okay, but the helmet was thrashed.

Despite the damage, I proceeded to wear the helmet as we tackled the groomers on Nevada side at Heavenly. It ended up okay, though my helmet sits crookedly and there's a crack. Time for a new helmet!

Look! Wendy on skis!:
What looks like minor cosmetic damage to the helmet (crack is on the other side):
By the time we got back to the cabin in the afternoon, the boys (Will, Abe and Robert) were at the cabin. Yay, more people.

The boys had schemed up some weekend fun in the form of a ginger beer tasting. You may or may not know that their drink of choice is the "Dark and Stormy", which consists of Gosling's dark rum, ginger beer, and lime. I never knew about all the different types and makers of ginger beer until the boys started drinking DNS's.

We made spaghetti and meatballs (beef and fake-beef!) for dinner, here's Sandy admiring the vat o' beef:
The Ginger Beer Tasting process:

  • 15 ginger beers to taste
  • 5 rounds of 3 ginger beers
  • Tasting consisted of ginger beer alone, and ginger beer in a DNS
  • recording tasting notes on the ginger beer alone (e.g. spiciness, color, carbonation, sweetness, etc.) and how it combines with Goslings and lime
  • each taster gives a score (1-10; 10 being really damn good) for the ginger beer, average of all the scores gave overall score
  • overall ranking after all scores are tallied

Round 1: Cock 'n Bull, Buderim, Maine Root

Round 2: Vita Malt (ick, that was NOT ginger beer!), Bundaberg, Stewart's

Round 3: The Ginger People, Reed's Original, Goya
Round 4: Fentiman's, DG Jamaican, Regatta
Round 5: Reeds Extra Ginger, AJ Stephans, Schwepps

The top three: Bundaberg, DG Genuine, Cock n' Bull.....no surprise there...

Big kudos to Abe and the boys for arranging the ginger beer tasting, I didn't think we'd make it through all 15. More details on the tasting and the notes will probably be found on Abe's blog very soon...

On Sunday morning, it was a sweet treat to wake up to 2 feet of fresh snow...pow day!!!

It was such a great pow day, laps of Powderbowl trees were my fave of the day. Great way to end a weekend (and possibly my ski season...boo!).
All in all, great Tahoe weekend!
