Pow-dah!

February 28, 2011

Finally, a snowstorm that I get a front row seat to! I headed up to Tahoe on Thursday night with Abe and Wendy, which was fantastic idea, considering how much snow came down on Thursday through Saturday.

On Friday, I only got an hour of glorious stormy powder before they shut down the entire mountain due to wind gusts. Check out a couple pics in the storm here:

About three feet fell before the skies parted and the sun came through to reveal one of the best days of skiing I've ever had in Tahoe. Check it out the snaps below...

By the afternoon, the mountain was pretty skiied out, with no stash of powder unturned...

On Sunday, I decided to opt for my board instead of skis and joined the rest of the crew on boards (all snowboards? unheard of!).

Glorious!

Yogi!

February 20, 2011

I didn't go up to Tahoe on President's Day long weekend with Will as our Squaw passes were blacked-out, and because for the first year since joining Genentech, we didn't have the holiday off. (But at least we got extra time at Christmas now...).

On Sunday night, Key and I headed over to Robert and Sue Hee's to meet their new family member, a 11-week old puppy (Westie-Pug mix) named Yogi:

Oh, and Sue Hee made this wicked lasagna from the Silver Spoon cookbook:

It was awesome to meet adorable Yogi. I can see how he is melting Robert's cold, cold French-Canadian-Jewish heart. :)

Atelier Crenn

February 19, 2011

On Friday night, I met up with Kerstin for dinner at the new culinary hotspot, Atelier Crenn, solo venture from hot chef Dominique Crenn. The restaurant is in the sophisticated and minimally-designed former Plumpjack space on Fillmore (Union Street neighborhood), and features Crenn's "poetic" tasting menu.

The menu includes Crenn's poetic stylings, with each dish described in prose. Kerstin and I chose the "Three Savory Courses" route (for $59), with the option to add a cheese and dessert course after if we still had space ($75 for 5 courses).

To start, we were treated to the "Amusements: An Introduction to Winter", featuring five different amuse bouches to start the meal. The different choices included potato pockets, hamachi crudo, foie gras pellets, deep-fried seaweed, and goose liver pate. This was a fantastic beginning to the meal and every bite was delicious. Thankfully, we chose the right order of bites to try, as we started light with the potato pockets and ended with the goose liver pate.

We each chose the Foie Gras to start, served with "winter nuances", which was the best serving of this delicacy that I've ever had, balanced nicely with the "nuances":

We both also chose the Arctic Char as our second course, with rose, horseradish and fennel. The presentation included the server pouring the rose essence on dry ice to create the effect below (the char is sitting on a large decorative rock):

The Char was delightful and perfectly cooked.

In between courses, we were treated with two palate cleansers, the first was a meyer lemon foam:

The second palate cleanser of grapefruit sorbet, and some other fixin's that I can't remember:

Of note, the second palate cleanser was served as the kitchen made a mistake on Kerstin's third course and they wanted to keep us happy while they fixed their error. I was impressed by the serving staff, who recognized immediately the error and helped us continue to enjoy our dinner without interruption.

For the third course, I chose "The Sea, an interpretation of aquatic flavors", which included morsels of oysters, scallops, rock shrimp, uni, and "sand". It was so delicious.

In the end, there was no room for cheese or dessert, but just as well, an excuse to come back.

As I had posted in my post-food-heaven Facebook post, this was one of the best meals that I've ever had in SF. I can't wait to go back.

Nightlife for Beth

February 18, 2011

On Thursday night, I headed to the Cal Academy of Sciences for "Nightlife" and to meet up with Beth and some other friends for her birthday celebration.

We wandered around, enjoyed the people-watching, and happened upon this docent who was demonstrating the  different animal "baculum":

Happy Birthday, Beth!

Uva Enoteca

February 9, 2011

Last night, Will and I joined Key and Robert for some eats at Uva Enoteca, a great place in Lower Haight.

Some shared charcuterie (proscuitto di parma, hot coppa, salame):

The boys shared the pizza with lamb, wild mushrooms, mozzarella and tomato:

I had the Ragu (wild boar, tomato, onion, parmigiano), which was dee-li-cious!:

Will had the Puttanesca (lamb, loives, capers, tomato, parsley):

Key had the pork with

Robert had the Fregula (prawns, pistachios, pomegranate, pecorino and mizuna):

Some desserts that I can't quite remember what they were (I didn't try them, so I can't even tell you what they tasted like):

Overall, dinner was fabulous and I would highly recommend Uva Enoteca. I can see why so many folks love this neighborhood gem.
