Memorial Day Long Weekend

May 28, 2007

I'm not sure if it's that work has been haggardly-busy or it's the aftermath of the big move, but I've been in dire need of the long weekend. I was excited to do absolutely nothing.

June is going to be exceptionally busy, partly because I'll be out of town three out of five weekends traveling for fun or frisbee, so I was particularly keen to do nothing but enjoy the new place and hang out in SF.

Will and I hung out in front of the flat-screen (I finally got him to watch "Snakes On A Plane" with me, the DVD from Netflix that we've had for months because we didn't feel up to watching it), brunched in the neighborhood, ran errands, played a round of 9 holes at the Jack Fleming course at Harding Park, had my aunt and uncle over for dinner, and some more of nothing.

On Monday, I headed down to San Jose to see the family...of course. Here are the obligatory cute pics of the kids:

Hope you all had a nice Memorial Day long weekend!

Katharine's Idea of A "Light Meal"

May 22, 2007

Oops, this blogspot is a little late.

Katharine has been a busy little clinical trial manager lately, traveling to and fro and missing Abe's birthday dinner due to a delayed flight. So, because she missed our faces and was in the mood to whip up a gaggle of "small plates", she invited us over on a Monday night to catch up.

Kat made 7 or 8 different things for us to sample, which ended up being a pretty hefty meal once it all added up on your plate. She stuffed roasted peppers with herbed goat cheese from scratch, whipped up Abe's favorite insalata caprese, some mango rice that was to die for, curry-spiced chicken, fresh asparagus, and so on, and so on...

For dessert, she baked fresh chocolate chip cookies served with vanilla bean ice cream and Scharffenberger chocolate sauce...OMG.

It was great to catch up with Kat in the comforts of her warm, cozy kitchen and dining room. I could get used to Kat's idea of "small plates"...

Abe Turns 31!

May 18, 2007

Yesterday was Abe's 31st birthday, and we headed out for dinner in the Mission.

But, before that, some folks from work were meeting up around the corner on Mission at Medjool. It was a nice day, with a good breeze, but a clear view of the skyline, so pretty.

We rolled through good conversation, and the next thing I knew, I had gone through 4 gin and tonics. Awesome.

Will and I headed over to Dosa to meet up with the gang for Abe's birthday dinner. We arrived to find Abe and Robert drinking out of paper bags...classy!

Dosa is primarily a walk-in restaurant, and they only take reservations for parties of 6-10 people. There were 8 of us, and I was in no mood to coordinate anything else, so we left it up to our wonderful server, who brought us amazing dishes.

Dosa serves up Southern Indian cuisine has been recognized as one of SF Chronicle Michael Bauer's Top 100 Restaurants in 2006.

Our server attempted to explain what each dish was, with descriptions and suggestions of how to eat it, but I was a few drinks in, so all I recall is how great everything tasted. We had four starters, two salads, and eight dishes from the main menu.

The trademark dish of Dosa is of course, the dosa. Dosas are wonderful thin crepes made of lentils and crepes, so light and amazing that they almost melt in your mouth. We tried dosas of different fillings and consistencies, and all were enjoyable.

After dinner, we headed over to Beauty Bar for an after dinner drink.

Happy birthday Abe!

Happy Mother's Day!

May 13, 2007

Happy Mother's Day out there to all you mamas!

What a difference a year makes! Last year, my sister could barely waddle around as she was 8 months prego with the twins. And now this year, the twins are huge, with toothy smiles and lots of fun.

We did a repeat of last year and headed to Il Fornaio in Hotel St. Claire in downtown San Jose for Mother's Day brunch.

Charlotte and Olivia were wearing adorable matching outfits, cute white and hot pink dresses with white sweaters...aww....

The rest of the weekend was spent enjoying the new flat, hanging pictures, vegging in front of the new 46 inch flat-screen that Will splurged on (damn, HDTV is good, you can see everything!), hanging out with JonZ over dinner at Nirvana (their kamikaze noodles are so good and their girlie drinks too!), furniture shopping in the Mission and SOMA, and watching a whole lot of playoff basketball and hockey. Good times.

Cinco de Mayo!

May 6, 2007

Happy belated Cinco de Mayo!

Thank goodness the big move is over and we're starting to enjoy the new place. On our first Saturday in the house, we went a couple blocks over to Queen Malika for crepes and a great cup of coffee for brunch.

I headed to San Jose on Saturday afternoon to see my sister and her family (I was jonesing for some cute babies and adorable 4 year old since it's been a couple weeks).

Simon is almost crawling!

In late afternoon, I headed back to San Francisco for dinner and then a little drink action for Cinco de Mayo at one of my all-time favorite dive bars, The Latin American Club. Good lord, that places mixes a strong drink...

It was gorgeous night and the streets were full of lively folks and street performers. And, it turns out, that we're only a $5 cab away from the Mission now...
