Weekend Re-Cap: Twins = No Sleep

August 22, 2006

I have confirmed that the best form of birth control is volunteering for night duty for your sister's newborn twins. Seriously, if you or anyone is in need of some intervention, my sister and brother-in-law would be happy to have some help any night.

I headed down to San Jose immediately after work on Friday night, with the intent to give them an extra set of hands for the night and most of Saturday. Babies are tough in general, but if you throw in two, it makes it more than double the work. If you're "lucky", the twins are not on the same eating schedule, which requires some major finesse if there's only one person (or patience with manic crying). It's always a good idea to change the diaper before they eat (a joyous experience as always). Both of the twins are healthy eaters and they eat every 2-3 hours. Like most premature babies, experience some level of acid reflux or indigestion, so both Charlotte and Simon also need to be held in an elevated position for at least a half hour after they eat. And, burping is an artform and essential for a happy baby. Simon is also on a rigorous medication schedule due to his longer stint in the NICU, so there's an elaborate tracking sheet that they use for the feedings.

So, 28 hours of baby-filled excitement later, I drive my sorry, sleepy butt back to San Francisco and promptly fall into a comatose sleep. My poor sister...

Sunday was filled with a nice sleep-in, brunch, and then a late-afternoon frisbee practice with my team. Check out our new website, it's a work in progress...
