Namu

June 11, 2008

On Wednesday night, a bunch of us (Will, Key, Wendy, Gail, Kerry Soo, Sue Hee and I) went to Namu in Inner Richmond for dinner. Namu is a cool and sleek restaurant that serves up Asian small plates (Japanese with Korean and California influence). The restaurant is the brainchild of brothers Dennis and David Lee, of Happy Belly Foodcarts.

The original intent was to partake in Dine About Town, but once we saw the menu and the family-style format, we realized that it made more sense (food and $$-wise) to just order a la carte. The dishes are small plates meant to share, and with seven people, we were able to try a bunch of different items, which were wonderful.

All the items we shared are below:

Daily crudo of sashimi of hamachi, with lemon, sake and ponzu infused battera konbu, fleur de sel, olive oil and garlic chili oil.
Tombo tataki (grilled seared wild tombo tuna with lime and thai chile sesame ponzu).
Monterey calamari with kimchee tartar sauce.
Bi Bim Kooksoo Salad (cold soba noodles, chopped romaine, kimchee, pine nuts, tofu, cucumber with kimchee sesame dressing).
Crispy mung bean cake (mung bean puree, bean sprouts, onion, soy sesame dipping sauce).
Shitake dumplings in a dashi mushroom broth.
Spicy pork ribs (four niman ranch baby back ribs with kojichan sake marinade).

Portobello mushroom with garlic and a kurosu reduction.
Four hokkaido scallops with cucumber, ginger chili garlic sauce.
Line-caught Bodega Bay black cod that was marinated with denjang saikyo miso. Niman Ranch Kobe-style skirt steak with a korean kalbi barbeque marinade.

Chocolate layered brioche melted belgian chocolate, brioche, nigori sake strawberry sauce and fresh strawberries.
Kabocha chawan mushi silky coconut custard baked in a kabocha squash served warm with a browned coconut milk and ginger reduction
Adzuki red bean cupcake adzuki red bean and chocolate cupcake served with yuzu creme anglaise.
The dinner was fantastic, the company delightful. My favorite items of the night were the crudo, dumplings, ribs, the kobe skirt steak (surprise), and the brioche dessert. Check out Namu, it's a great date place.
